Bob Perra Memorial Ride

According to his good friend and frequent riding partner, Michael Malkowski, the Mable Lake Ride was one of Bob’s favourites.   Therefore it is fitting that the Killer Beez do this ride to remember Bob and all the good times we spent in his company.

The ride will start in Lumby at 10 AM on Saturday, June 11th and will be led by Michael.  The starting point is the Lumby SuperSave located at 2056 Vernon Street.  There is ample parking available in the SuperSave lot.

The Mable Lake ride is a very scenic, rolling, out and back route of approximately 70 km with no major hills.

Those wishing to carpool can meet in the parking lot near the Eco Centre in Mission Creek Park (Springfield and Benvolin) at 8:45 AM.

In case of wet weather this ride may be postponed and participants will be advised through WhatsApp and this website.

In Memoriam

It is the most upsetting of all posts when we have to announce the loss of one of our beloved Beez. Having just chatted with Bob over coffee, smiling and happy after a 90km ride, his very sudden passing just days later shocked us all. There are lots of shared kilometres on our bikes around the Okanagan to remember, and Bob will be missed. We offer condolences and supportive thoughts to Betty and the rest of the family.

Snowshoe Saturday

Last snowshoe outing! We will meet Saturday, April 2, at 9am in the Summit parking lot at Nordic (right turn off Highway 33 at the high point, 2km after the Big White turnoff).

The plan is to go to Thunder Mountain and enjoy the views. Estimated duration: 2.5hrs.

A thermos with coffee for afterwards is always a nice treat!

Weekend Plans March 26/27

Here is your Beez update for this coming weekend – we really hope to see some of you after the long winter break!

Saturday – March 26
This might be the last weekend for skiing, and we plan to celebrate the end of the ski season with a snow outing for everyone … Meet at 9am at the Summit parking lot on Saturday morning. Some might ski, depending on weather and grooming, some will snowshoe. We might go to the lookout tent or do a tailgate party. Please bring a thermos, some snacks and maybe a blanket/pillow/chair.

Sunday – March 27
We are planning to hike around Dilworth, even if there is a chance of rain (bring a jacket). Meet at 10am at the Bean Scene on Dickson for the first coffee.

Meet at 10:30am at Dilworth Dr/Glacier Ct to hike.

Armstrong/Enderby Ride Sept 25 – NEW DATE!

We are planning on riding the backroads from Armstrong to Enderby (and back via Grindrod) on Saturday, Sept 25. Start time at the Memorial Park in Armstrong at 9am sharp. Washrooms should be open.

The route takes the backroads towards Enderby and then to Grindrod on mostly flat roads. Snack break is at Farmer John’s in Grindrod. After that, the regular route takes Springbend Road to Deep Creek and back to Armstrong. If you want more climbing, you can take Grandview Bench from Farmer John’s to Deep Creek.

It’s about 40km to Farmer John’s, total around 80km if taking Springbend. The route can be made shorter or flatter if needed.

Final assessment on the weather will be posted Friday afternoon. Please check the blog.

Annual Rail Trail Excursion Sept 10

With moderate temperatures and a chill in the air at night, it’s time to schedule our annual Rail Trail tour to Coldstream. This year, we will be starting on Wood Lake to add this lakeside section for the first time.

Meet at 10am on Friday Sept 10 in the parking lot at the east end of Woodsdale Road (arrow in the pictures), just before the uphill towards Oyama we have ridden many times.

It’s always a favourite so cancel any non-essential plans and join us 🙂 It is 26km (one way) to the pub in Coldstream for lunch. Pace will be very leisurely. Most of us use a mountain bike or e-bike with sturdy tires but it has been done on a road bike with wider tires as well.

Check the blog on Thursday, September 9, for a weather update.

Kootenay Tour

I think we all have expressed already how much we enjoyed the Kootenay Tour and how much we appreciated Angus and Bunny organizing this (and Andrew providing his bike fixing skills). Thanks again!

I have selected a few highlights and added them to the gallery:

New plan: Armstrong Ride on SATURDAY!

Seems like the September Sundays are cursed 🙂

Considering the weather forecast, we are moving the special ride to Saturday (Sept 21) as it should be a sunny and warm day, compared to Sunday.

We decided to do the Armstrong ride instead of Green Mountain as it is lower, has shortcut options if needed and seemed to be very popular, based on your feedback. We want the special rides to be safe excursions that everybody enjoys!

So here are the details for Saturday:

Armstrong Classic on September 21th

We will meet at 8:45am at the Memorial Park in Armstrong (where the Century Ride starts); you should be ready to start cycling by 9:00am.  Please try to car pool to Armstrong with other cyclists if you can – meet at 7:30am at the Bean Scene on Dickson to catch or offer a ride.

The park washrooms will be open in Armstrong.  Remember to bring enough food and drinks for the ride. We are planning on doing the 90km route from Armstrong via Grindrod and Enderby back to Armstrong (980m elevation gain). There will be a resupply at Farmer John’s in Grindrod (at 63km); they have drinks, snacks, ice cream etc.  After the ride we can decide if we want to go for lunch somewhere.

Watch this blog for a last update on September 21th at 6am to confirm (or cancel if we really have to) the ride, based on weather. But the forecast looks good!

If the weather is decent on Sunday morning at 9am, we will meet for the regular Sunday ride at the Bean Scene and adjust length if necessary, depending on the forecast.
