Hairpins Anyone ??

Have a desire to cycle some hairpins and don’t mind flying to get there?  Then this might be the hill for you.  600 hairpins could be a considerable exaggeration, however there certainly are enough to keep you busy.  Starting at an elevation of 3,197 meters may be a bit of an inconvenience.  Click here for the hill specs.

Hike for Saturday – October 29

As requested, we are going to hike Pin Cushion Mountain (Peachland) on Saturday (Oct 29)!

It’s a short hike of about 2km to the top but it is steep so bring good shoes and/or poles.

  • Elevation at the gate (start): 570 m (1875 ft)
  • Elevation at the summit: 815 m (2682 ft)

The parking lot is off Ponderosa Drive (turn right at the next light AFTER the IGA/Petrocan shopping area on the right). Hike starts at 10am, rain or shine.

Please carpool from Starbucks on Louie Drive (the “new” Starbucks in West Kelowna) due to limited parking and for the Earth – meet there at 9:30am. If you can arrange to pick up a fellow hiker somewhere in Kelowna, even better.

We will most definitely gather at Bliss Bakery after the hike :) Also, there is an option to walk around the new Goats Peak Regional Park (which is off the highway when coming back from Peachland) on the way back, if anybody wants to walk more. It has very nice views as well.

Hike for Saturday (and Rail Trail Tour tomorrow!)

Remember: Rail Trail Tour tomorrow, Wednesday – Enjoy the last sunshine before it turns ugly! Details in the previous post …

Hike for Saturday, October 22:

The weather forecast looks questionable so the plan is to meet at the Bean Scene (Dickson) for a coffee at 9am, then decide whether it’s nice enough to hike Scenic Canyon (starting in the Greenway parking lot) or maybe just do a walk on the Rail Trail starting at the Bean Scene if it’s wet.

We will decide, caffeinated, at 9:45am where we will go! Bring a jacket!

Annual Rail Trail Excursion – October 19

With a forecast for 21C and sunshine for Wednesday, we are looking at ideal weather for our annual rail trail trip to Coldstream! Please join us!

We will be starting on the south end of Wood Lake in Lake Country by the tennis courts. See picture. Meet at 1 pm on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, in the parking lot at the east end of Woodsdale Road (arrow in the pictures), just before the uphill towards Oyama that we have ridden many times.

It’s always a favourite so cancel any non-essential plans and join us :) It is 26km (one way) to the pub in Coldstream for refreshments. Pace will be very leisurely. Most of us use a mountain bike or e-bike with sturdy tires but it has been done on a road bike with wider tires as well.

Double Whammy: Hike AND Wrap Up Party!

Mark the day in your calendars: Saturday, October 15!

First a hike to burn some calories, then a party to replenish those calories in the company of your friends! We are celebrating the end of another fun cycling season (though we keep cycling as long as the weather allows!).

Hike:

Meet at KLO Creek at 9am to hike to Angel Springs and back (first flat, then an ascent through the forest to the springs). Distance is roughly 12km, with a 450m ascent. The creek is easy to cross this time of year and the colours should be getting pretty!

Carpool from the playground near the EECO centre as the parking is very limited at the trailhead. Meet at the playground at 8:30am.

Wrap Up Party:

It starts at 5pm at Angus’ and Sharon’s house (#43 – 2155 Horizon). Please bring a small dish and your favourite beverage. The gate to get into the complex closes at 6pm.

Hope to see you there to catch up and celebrate cycling!

Hike for Saturday – October 8 – Special Treat!

And just like that, Fall is here and the hiking season has started!

Before weather and conditions will keep us closer to or in town for our hikes, we have a treat for you: Tom will be leading us up Nordic Mountain on a trail that he created about 2 years ago (for hiking or snowshoeing).

Meet at 8:30am at the EECO Center on Springfield by the playground to carpool.

Parking is at the Summit Parking lot at Nordic, at the highway summit about 1.5km past the Big White turnoff (exit the highway on your right; Tom will open the gate for us). The hike starts at 9:15am.

Bring water and a snack. Total distance is about 8.5km. We are thankful to Tom for leading this hike; I hope you can make it!

New Riding Opportunity – South Perimeter Road

Recently an enterprising swarm of Killer Beez lead by Paul Stephenson (including 2 of our Queen Beez) found a new riding area not currently populated by our main enemy, the automobile.  It’s called South Perimeter Road and is not currently used by cars as it is awaiting it’s second layer of asphalt.

So get there fast if you want to be able to ride it before it opens to traffic.

It’s a climb to get there however.  Our Beez buddies took Uplands across Kettle Valley, Southridge, and then Upper Gordon.   Taking Gordon all the way would obviously make for a long, nasty climb.

Thanks to Paul Stephenson and Mike Wagstaff for the photos.

Killer Beez Fall Schedule

As in previous years, we do not have an end date for our cycling season … as long as you want to ride, just show up for the Saturday and Sunday rides and find like-minded people.

However, we will be starting our Saturday hikes on October 8 (watch this space for details for our first hike). From that same weekend on (October 8/9), the Saturday and Sunday rides will be starting at 10am … as long as the weather allows. Wednesday rides also continue at 4pm as long as the weather allows

Please consider joining us for our hikes!
