From the City of Kelowna:
We are getting there …
More light, warmer days. Cycling isn’t far off!
If the roads are dry and the morning mild, we will start the rides next Sunday, April 9, at 10am. Meeting spot is Bean Scene on Dickson.
This early in the season, rides will happen weather permitting. You can always show up for coffee if it’s wet 🙂
Old Vernon Road – Bike Lane issues
Please see below the note from Chuck about Old Vernon Road bike lane issues. Could you please email him directly if you have engaged in this with the ministry, are planning to do it or have other questions?
I believe it is an important issue … such a dangerous stretch that we all ride frequently.
So the major issue is when cyclists or pedestrians walk or ride along Old Vernon Road, there is no room for them as the road is too narrow. Especially when there are time trials for the competitive cyclists, there are considerably more cyclists on the road and I fear that one day, one of them is going to get hit.
I also ride this road and don’t like the fact there aren’t any bike lanes from McKenzie to Spencer or Spencer to Hwy 97.
I would like to know if anyone in your group has started a dialogue with the ministry of highways regarding making bike lanes on Old Vernon Road from McKenzie to Spencer Road.
Please let me know as I have made an initial call to them.

Looking for a buddy to help me on a long ride…i’m coming into town on Friday (july 15) and need to get a 6 hour ride in (training for IM Tremblant). Anyone in the group open to getting paid to ride with a lonely rider? I’m there with my family, therefore I’m looking to get my ride started around 6am to get it done by noon. Look forward to hearing from this very supportive cycling community. |
Update on the Rail Trail
Castanet published an update on the fundraising campaign for the Rail Trail (read it here).
The donation information and updates are also available online – There is still time to donate!
Rail Trail Campaign Update
The matching funds have been increased to $100,000! As of July 4th 229 donations have come in totalling $42,140. This has inspired the donor to increase matching funds to $100,000. This gives us 6 days to maximize the matching challenge and fund 1.25 km of trail. If you have yet to make a donation, now is a great time. Your donation will be matched and have twice the impact. All donations greater than $25 will receive a tax receipt. You can donate online using the link above or drop off your donation at either Community Foundation listed below. Donations of financial securities are also accepted at the Foundations. If you have made a donation, the communities along the trail thank you. Please forward this on to your friends, family, neighbours, and co-workers to ensure that we can take full advantage of this very generous opportunity.
It will take a community to build a legacy…one metre at a time. Let’s Make it Happen! Dononate online or at one of the Foundations. Update on the Rail Trail
 ![]() |
The fundraising campaign has begun! The website is live and ready for your online donations, and your enthusiasm to get involved with events and activities to raise funds to build the rail trail. Over the past months, the new owners of the rail trail corridor (Kelowna, Lake Country, the North Okanagan Regional District, and the Okanagan Indian Band) have cooperated to lay the preliminary framework for building a hard-packed trail from Coldstream to Kelowna. It is now up to all of us to raise the $7.86 million that the trail is expected to cost. This is our trail and the opportunity of a lifetime! This wonderful trail will be an almost 50 km continuous corridor that will provide a link to all communities along its amazing route featuring many of the valley’s most scenic spots. Everyone’s help is needed take on the job of funding and fundraising to build this trail and create a lasting legacy that will be a treasured asset of our beautiful valley. A meter of construction of trail will cost $160, and contributions of any amount are greatly appreciated! What can you do?
